Our Story
Big Lug Brewing Co
A Story of Friendship, Food, and Fermentation
The Beginning of Big Lug
Big Lug's Origin Story
“When Harry Met Sally” gets all the credit, but honestly, “When Eddie Met Scott” might be the better love story… just with more hops and fewer diner scenes.
It all started when Eddie Sahm was running a craft beer-focused restaurant in Indianapolis. Through local beer events and friendships in the brewing scene, he met Scott Ellis. The two quickly bonded over a love of classic beer styles, relaxed vibes, and great music.
As time went on, Eddie saw an opportunity to bring something new to the northside of Indy. He imagined a food-focused brewpub that could help revitalize the Monon Trail and give the neighborhood a fresh, welcoming spot. Scott, always up for a good challenge and a cold beer, signed on. Together, they built the brewery from the ground up.
Beers were sampled, terrible names were brainstormed, and plenty of “research” meals were enjoyed. In the end, they landed on the name Big Lug, a nod to their personalities and their approachable, hearty style of food and beer. It felt friendly, a little goofy, and totally them.
From the beginning, the goal was to create a space where anyone could feel at home and be part of something. Beer is meant to be shared, not hoarded. Big Lug is, and always will be, about bringing people together over good beer and good company.
The Story So Far
Keepin' On Luggin' On
After Big Lug Canteen opened, our restaurant group, Sahm’s Hospitality, began growing across central Indiana. That meant more Big Lug taps showing up in new places, but it also made us realize that the word “Canteen” didn’t quite fit everywhere. So, while our Nora brewpub kept the Big Lug Canteen name, we renamed the brewery itself to Big Lug Brewing Company.
In 2018, we took the opportunity to purchase and revamp a nearby brewery. The upgrade tripled our brewing capacity and added a canning line that we’re pretty sure is the oldest still in use in the country (we’re at least 98% convinced). Alongside the new production brewery, we also opened Liter House Event Space and Half Liter Beer & BBQ. Today, all three are staples of the South Broad Ripple neighborhood.
Since the challenges of 2020, we’ve focused on quality, innovative brewing techniques, and a balanced lineup of beers—all aimed at exceeding the expectations of our guests.
